Synergetic Play Therapy® (SPT)
Which Therapists are Trained in this Approach:

What Is Synergetic Play Therapy®?
Synergetic Play Therapy® (SPT) is a nervous-system–informed, relational play therapy approach designed to help children heal from emotional distress, stress, and trauma through the language of play.
SPT recognizes that children do not primarily process experiences through words — they process through their bodies, emotions, and relationships. Play becomes the medium through which children express what they cannot yet verbalize.
Rather than focusing on changing behaviour alone, SPT focuses on regulating the child’s nervous system, strengthening emotional safety, and supporting healthy relational connection so lasting change can occur.
How Does Synergetic Play Therapy® Work?
Synergetic Play Therapy® integrates:
- Neuroscience and nervous-system regulation
- Attachment and relational safety
- Child-led play and symbolic expression
- Therapist self-awareness and co-regulation
The Role of the Nervous System
In Synergetic Play Therapy®, behaviour is viewed as communication, not misbehaviour.
When a child’s nervous system is in survival mode (fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown), learning, emotional control, and problem-solving become difficult. SPT helps children move out of survival states and into a regulated state where growth and healing are possible.
Through play, movement, creativity, and relational attunement, the child’s nervous system learns that it is safe to relax, feel, and connect.
The Importance of the Therapeutic Relationship
A core component of SPT is the therapeutic relationship.
Children heal not just through play itself, but through being in a relationship where they feel:
- Seen
- Understood
- Accepted
- Emotionally safe
The therapist uses co-regulation — staying grounded, present, and emotionally available — to help the child regulate their own internal experience. Over time, these experiences are internalized and carried into the child’s world outside of therapy.

Caregiver Involvement
Synergetic Play Therapy® recognizes that meaningful change happens not only in the therapy room, but also within the child’s relationships.
When appropriate, caregivers are supported through:
- Education about the nervous system
- Understanding behaviour through a regulation lens
- Learning how to support emotional safety at home
This collaborative approach helps extend the therapeutic work beyond sessions and strengthens attachment and connection within the family system.

- Anxiety and worry
- Emotional outbursts or shutdown
